Pioneer Recipe
I debated whether to call this a pioneer recipe or a modern pioneer recipe, and finally decided that it was a pioneer recipe. Pies were definitely a pioneer food, and I figured as soon as the early homesteaders planted orchards, they were probably making peach pie too! Not to mention this recipe uses super simple ingredients that could easily be found in the homestead kitchen.

If you have an orchard on your homestead and if you grow your own peaches, this pie is the perfect way to use up some of your fresh peaches when they come in season! My homestead is in the woods, so I opt to support local farmers who grow organic peaches instead.

Do I Need to Peel the Peaches?
A lot of the nutrition in a peach is contained in the skin, but…. unfortunately you do have to peel the peaches before using them in this peach pie. Peeling the peaches helps them cook down better and makes for a better texture in the pie.
When I first made peach pie, I thought peeling, pitting, and slicing the peaches was going to be somewhat challenging. To my surprise, I learned a quick and easy technique that makes peeling peaches fun and simple!
With that being said, how easy a peach is to peel will depend on the peach. It is easiest to use peaches that are ripe, but not too squishy. The variety of peaches you use will also affect how easy the pits can be removed. Peach varieties that are considered ‘freestone peaches’ will have pits that easily release from the flesh versus peach varieties that are considered ‘cling peaches’ will have pits that stick to the flesh.
Just about any variety of peach will taste good in this pie, but I like to look for freestone peaches because they are so much easier to work with! Some popular freestone peach varieties include Elegant Lady, Redtop, Gala, and Flameprince.
I also like to buy heirloom produce whenever I can, and peaches are not exception. Some heirloom peach varieties to be on the look out for include Southland, Cresthaven, Elberta, Monroa, and O’Henry.
How to Peel Peaches
Peeling and pitting peaches is super fun and easy when you use this method! It can get a little messy, especially if your peaches are very ripe, but it’s well worth the effort to make a delicious peach pie!
Step 1. Fill a large saucepan with water and bring the water to a boil. While you are waiting for the water to boil, fill another bowl with cold water and ice cubes.
Step 2. Once the water is boiling, place the peaches (I did three at a time) in the boiling water. Let them sit in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes.
Step 3. Remove the peaches from the boiling water and place them in the cold water. This stops the cooking process. Let them set for a minimum of 1 minute before moving onto the next step.
Step 4. Next, take one of the peaches from the cold water and make a slit in the skin with a pairing knife. You should then be able to peel off the entire skin. Once the skin is off, cut the peach in half and remove the pit. Then you can slice the peaches into pieces for peach pie!
Repeat the process for the rest of the peaches or until you have enough peach slice to make your grain-free peach pie! Have extra peaches you need to use up? No problem, make sure you whip up a batch of these simple gluten-free peach bars while you’re at it!
Are Peaches Good for You?
Peaches not only taste good in a pie, but they are also loaded with health benefits! While the skin of the peach is probably the most nutrient dense part of the peach, the peach flesh can also provide some nutrition and benefits.

- Naturally Anti-Inflammatory: They are also anti-inflammatory and help reduce the amount of histamines in the body!

- Carotenoid Rich: Peaches contain all five classifications of carotenoids.
- Rich in Vitamins: They are a great source of vitamin A and C.
This grain-free peach pie is perfectly healthy and perfectly delicious! Containing low inflammation flours, a slow metabolizing sugar, and nutritious peaches, this pie might even count as a breakfast food!
Grain-free Peach Pie (gluten-free & nut free)
Ingredients
Pie Crust
- 1 grain-free pie crust
Pie Filling
- 6-7 cups peeled, pitted, and sliced peaches approx. 6-7 ripe peaches
- 1/4 cup cassava flour
- 1/4 cup Bob’s Red Mill tapioca flour
- 2 T. coconut sugar
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. sea salt
Crumble Topping
- 1/3 cup cold organic butter sliced into T. size pieces
- 1/4 cup cassava flour
- 1/4 cup arrowwroot flour
- 1 tsp. cream of tartar
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 T. coconut sugar
- 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400° F. Combine all of the pie filling ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Stir and make sure all the peach slices are coated. Pour into the pie crust.
- In a food processor, combine all of the crumble ingredients and pulse until it turns into a crumble mixture. How long you pulse the mixture will determine how big of a crumble you have. Longer pulse times make larger crumble clumps. Spread the crumble evenly over the peaches.
- Place the pie on a baking sheet (to catch any spillage) and bake for 10 minutes.
- Keeping the pie in the oven, reduce the temperature to 350° F and bake for another 40-45 minutes. The pie should be bubbly and the crumble should be browned.
- Move the pie to a cooling rack. Allow the pie to cool before cutting and serving! Store leftovers in the refrigerator.

Grain-free peach pie is flavorful and delicious! The sweet, fruity flavor of the peaches goes well with the tasty, buttery crumble topping. I love that this pie contains minimal amounts of added sugar but still tastes plenty sweet! Made with wholesome, simple ingredients, this pie recipe will quickly become a staple during peach season on the homestead.
