One of my most favorite snacks is homemade plantain chips! Homemade plantain chips are easy to make and taste delicious! They make a great on-the-go snack and they are inexpensive too!
Plantains look very much like a banana although they tend to be longer and bigger then the average banana. They are also starchier and less sweet then a banana. Traditionally, plantains are not eaten raw, but often cooked before being eaten. Due to not having a growing season, they are usually available year round. The plantain tree grows in moist, humid climates and produces bunches of 5-10 plantains.
They are a staple food in many of the countries in which they are grown. Did you know that plantains are actually the 10th most important staple food in the world? The color (ripeness) of the plantain usually determines how it is cooked. Green plantains are hard and not very sweet. These are best used for plantain chips or in recipes that call for unripe plantains. Yellow plantains are the mature form of a plantain and are sweeter. They are often fried or used for baking. Black plantains can still be used despite their color. Black plantains taste best when used in dessert recipes.
Homemade plantain chips are not only inexpensive, easy to make, and delicious, but they also have some health benefits!
