Grain-free pear pie is a delicious and nutritious fall pie that has an amazing taste! I first tried this pear when a my dad brought home some pears from a pear tree at one of his jobs. It had never occurred to me to make a pear pie until I got to thinking about what I could do with those pears! I did a Pinterest search, found a simple recipe, and went to work creating a grain-free, gluten free, and tree-nut free version for pear pie! My grain-free pear pie turned out fantastic, it has a great flavor and texture!

Making this pear pie was fun and easy! Washing, peeling, coring, and slicing the pears didn’t take me as long as I thought it would. I actually think that processing pears is faster and easier than say processing apples or peaches. I was skeptical about how the texture would turn out, but it ended up being very soft, smooth and delicious. Another thing that I love about this grain-free pear pie is that the pears contain some great health benefits! I never knew that pears were so good for you!

Benefits of Pears

  • Pears contain the most fiber out of any other fruit! The pectin fiber present in pears help promote a healthy digestive system.
  • The vitamin C content of pears helps  reduce oxidative stress and helps maintain a healthy metabolism.
  • Pear peels are beneficial too! They contain phytonutrients  such as polyphenols, phenolic acids, and flavonoids that promote overall good health.
  • They are a rich source of antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is linked to many disease such as cancer, asthma, and arthritis.
  • Daily servings of fruit, including pears, help detoxify your body.
  • Pears are lower on the glycemic index  than other fruits, which means that are less likely to set off your blood sugar.
  • The vitamin K and boron present in pears promotes healthy bone growth and maintenance.

So, as you can see, pears are good for everything from digestive health, to weight loss, to preventing heart disease. They can help fight diabetes, promote bone health, boost the immune system, and reduce inflammation!

Pear Fun Facts:

  • Pear trees are very cold hardy. They are grown on nearly every continent and can be harvested year-round.
  • It is thought that there are around 300 different pear species that all originated from 2 wild pear subspecies!
  • Some common pear types that you may see in the grocery store include Bartlett pears, Anjou pears, bosc pears, and Manchurian pears.
  • Pear flesh contains stone cells, sometimes called “grit”.
  • You can ferment pear juice to make hard pear cider!
  • Pears will ripen faster when stored next to bananas because of the chemicals that are released by the bananas.
  • Make pear sauce by blending the pears in a high speed blender. Then you can use the pear sauce in place of applesauce.

Grain-free pear pie turns the versatile, beneficial, and unique pear into a delicious dessert! I love how unique this pear pie is and how much it reminds me of fall. The flavor is very mild and pleasant and the texture is similar to an apple pie. I encourage you to give this pear pie a try, it would make a great addition to any Thanksgiving meal!
