What’s better than a chocolate cookie? Grain-free double chocolate cookies why of course! They have a rich, chocolate taste, just enough sweetness, and the perfect texture! I love crispy, chewy cookies that melt in your mouth. Add in the occasional chocolate chip (or minty chocolate gems are even better!) and you have a recipe for the best, double chocolate cookies ever! Garnish them with some chocolate shreds and flakey sea salt to take your chocolate cookies to the next level. The cookie jar will not stay full for long when these cookies are in your homestead kitchen!
These grain-free double chocolate cookies are a simple modern pioneer recipe. They use the basics, such as flour, sugar, and butter to create a simple, wholesome cookie that modern pioneers of all ages will love. They are also the perfect dessert recipe to share with friends or bring to family gatherings since they can easily be made allergy-friendly!
These double chocolate cookies are…
These are my go to cookie recipe for when I have to bring something small to a family gathering or outing. My cousins with food allergies love them and they are super easy to whip up quickly. It’s always great to have a stash of these in the freezer for whenever you need to satisfy that chocolate craving, guilt free!
Despite being so ‘healthy’, these cookies still have the amazing taste of a traditional cookie! I love the bold double chocolate flavor combined with the crispy texture and the occasional chocolate chunk.
These cookies are naturally gluten and grain free because I use tapioca flour and coconut flour in the recipe. Since coconut is not technically a tree nut, these cookies are also tree nut free! Despite having coconut flour in them, these cookies do not have a coconut flavor at all, and that’s coming from someone who has a sensitivity to coconut flavor!
Making these cookies dairy-free is super simple. Instead of using butter, just substitute in coconut oil, ghee, or any of your other favorite butter substitutes. I have found that when they are made with straight extra virgin coconut oil, they do take on a slight coconut taste.
To make these cookies egg free but still allow them to stay together, I use gelatin as a binder. It works great in these cookies and they stay together perfectly!
Much like there are all-purpose flour mixes, there are also multi-purpose recipes. I love multi-purpose recipes and this grain-free double chocolate cookie recipe happens to be one of them! This cookie recipe can be made into a variety of different cookie flavors with only a few changes made in the original recipe!
Here are a few cookie variations that I have made along with the adaptations I made to the original recipe (see the recipe near the bottom of this post):
I probably make the double chocolate cookie variety the most, but the other varieties are also a special treat! The double chocolate variety is my favorite, especially when I add a splash of mint extract and use HU mint gems.
For the chocolate gem cookies I use Unreal milk chocolate gems. Unreal also offers dark chocolate peanut gems and dark chocolate crispy quinoa gems. I love Unreal products and their peanut gems are probably my favorite of their products!
Some varieties that I have tried that I didn’t mention above include a white chocolate dipped peppermint cookie and candy cane cookies. Both were delicious, but I think my family voted that their favorite was the white chocolate dipped cookies!
Another great thing that I love about this recipe is that it doesn’t have to be made into just cookies! You can make this recipe into bars, cookie pizzas, use them for ice cream sandwiches, or even turn the recipe into a skillet cookie!
The thin, crispy nature of these cookies make them perfect for ice cream sandwiches! The key to making sure your cookies flatten is to…
Some factors that may contribute to how well your cookies flatten include the brand of coconut flour you use (I like Bob’s Red Mill or Anthony’s), how accurate your measuring was, and if you let the dough rest at all before scooping out the cookies. If you chill the dough before making the cookies, the cookies won’t flatten as much.
To keep these cookies free from refined sugar (like cane sugar) use Lily’s Sweets chocolate chips or Hu chocolate gems. I love using the Hu mint chocolate gems in these cookies and adding 1/2 tsp. of mint extract as well.

With all those options, I am sure you can’t wait to make this recipe. So let’s head to the kitchen! You will find these grain-free double chocolate cookies easy and fun to make. It is a quick recipe that is ready in minutes, perfect for when you want to make a quick, delicious dessert!
This is always my go-to cookie recipe because it is so quick and easy to make, low in sugar, and provides lots of options for whatever flavor my tastes desire! These grain-free double chocolate cookies have the perfect crispy edges with a soft, chewy middle. I love adding a splash of mint extract to the dough and adding chocolate mint gems instead of chocolate chips to turn them into double chocolate mint cookies. And the flakey sea salt sprinkled on top finishes off the flavor profile for these cookies…. rich chocolate combined with sweet and salty cookie flavor!

They are one of my favorite grain-free cookies! Arrowroot flour has been such a lifesaver for making recipes grain-free.
Would this work as brownies, do you think?
I have never tried making this recipe into brownies before. I have made it into cookie pizzas and bars before so I would imagine that it would work for brownies too! Let me know if you try it!
