Grain-free Bread Rolls- nut free

These grain-free bread rolls are totally amazing! When I created this recipe, I could not believe the simplicity of whipping up these rolls. Not to mention their taste and texture is amazing! I have a slight addiction to bread products, and being on a grain-free diet is somewhat of an inhibitor to my enjoyment of bread. However, these bread rolls were a total lifesaver for me! They satisfied my craving for a delicious dinner roll and they fit into my anti-inflammatory diet!

Baking Like a Pioneer!

So, these bread rolls are definitely a modern pioneer recipe! Bread was a staple back in the early homesteading days, however, the ingredients that the early pioneers used were a lot more wholesome than the ones that get put in our modern day breads.

That’s why it’s important to learn how to make your own wholesome, delicious bread products! Since Anna and I are on a low-inflammation diet, we try to limit the grains we use in our baked products. Thankfully, there are a multitude of grain-free flours that work great in bread recipes.

As modern pioneers, we find it very fulfulling to be able to make our own gluten-free and grain-free bread products right at home. We can even order all our ingredients right online through Thrive Market. Our backyard chickens provide the eggs for this bread roll recipe and the local sugar shack is the perfect resource for the maple syrup in these rolls.

Learning to make these grain-free bread rolls is so simple! No kneading, no bread machine, and no rise time needed! The rolls contain wholesome ingredients and are the perfect made-from-scratch dinner roll alternative. You will totally feel like a modern pioneer while you are making these!

Are They Healthy?

YES! If you haven’t caught on already, these grain-free bread rolls are absolutely healthy for you! Not only are they healthy, but they will sufficiently satisfy your craving for a dinner roll.

The one thing that stood out to me about these grain-free rolls was their amazing texture and taste. They do not get stretchy in the center like some grain-free rolls, especially ones made with tapioca flour. The three flours that I used are cassava flour, arrowroot flour, and coconut flour. None of these flours dominate the overall flavor of the rolls.

The cassave flour does have a distinct taste of it’s own, but it compliments the overall flavor of the rolls. There is some sugar in these rolls, but both sweeteners are naturally derived and healthy to have in moderation. I included sugar in these rolls to mimick the flavor that yeast rolls would have.

Speaking of yeast, these bread rolls are also yeast free! Due to the lack of yeast, the texture of the rolls is more bread-like, so not your typical ‘light and fluffy’ dinner roll. Despite the lack of fluffiness, these rolls are not dense.

Another amazing thing about these rolls is that they are allergy friendly! Suitable for anti-inflammatory diets and clean eating diets, these rolls are…

  • grain-free
  • tree nut free
  • gluten-free
  • corn free
  • yeast free
  • dairy-free
  • low sugar

How to Use Them

Bread rolls are fairly self-explanatory, but I wanted to give you a few ideas of how my family uses these bread rolls. Since they are a grain-free roll substitute, we use them in place of traditional dinner rolls or buns.

Generally our family likes to have a bread product when we have soup for dinner. These bread rolls make the perfect side for dairy-free butternut squash soup, venison stew, broccoli soup, or any other wholesome soup recipe!

We also like to use these bread rolls as buns. They pair perfectly with our homemade pulled BBQ chicken recipe as well as our crockpot BBQ venison that we like to make. I also like to use these rolls as hamburger buns, sloppy joe buns, or sandwich buns. A toasted ham sandwich with dairy-free cheese is delicious when made with these rolls!

The rolls are also delicious served like regular dinner rolls! Cut them in half, toast them, and serve them with grass-fed butter, honey, or homemade jelly! We like to have these rolls for breakfast too, served with fresh eggs from our own flock.

These grain-free bread rolls can be paired with a variety of meals and are the perfect alternative to traditional wheat or white flour rolls!

Recipe Tips

Like I mentioned earlier, these rolls are super easy to make. They only take about 15 minutes to whip up and get in the oven. After you make these rolls once, and get a feel for the recipe, you’ll find that you can make these rolls in a matter of minutes! Here are a few recipe tips to help you as make these rolls:

  • You can use tapioca flour instead of arrowroot flour in this recipe.
  • Using room temperature eggs will help all the ingredients mix together better and give the rolls some more loft.
  • You can use any baking oil as a substitute for the coconut oil in this recipe as long as the oil is in its liquid state.
  • Make sure you use warm water, it will incorporate into the batter better.
  • Adding the water one tablespoon at a time will ensure you achieve the right consistency. Depending on the size of the eggs you used, you may need slightly more or less water in your rolls.
  • If the dough does get too sticky to handle, just sprinkle some more tapioca flour on the dough.
  • I have found that using the very tip of a knife works best for creating the x’s on the rolls.
  • You can freeze these rolls! Anna and I would often make two batches together and freeze one batch for later use.

These grain-free bread rolls are simple, wholesome, and delicious! They are the perfect roll to serve with soups or salads and they work as a great bun for ham sandwiches, sloppy joes, or hamburgers. I love making this modern pioneer recipe!
