Pioneer Recipe

While apple pie may be your traditional American heritage pie, blueberry pie has got to be right up there! The early pioneers would have only had access to wild blueberries, which would have been smaller. However, as long as you have some sort of blueberries, you can make a blueberry pie!

One reason why I feel like this recipe is a modern pioneer recipe is the fact that I get to pick my own blueberries to make this pie with! While I don’t actually have a blueberry bush patch, I do have a blueberry farm down the road from my house where I can go pick my own berries. Picking blueberries has always been a fun family tradition every August. I love eating the berries right off the bush, they seem to taste better that way! I also love climbing underneath the bushes to find the biggest, plumpest berries.

My family usually picks a few quarts for freezing as well as a few extra quarts for eating and baking with. If you grow your own blueberries, than this recipe can become even more of a pioneer recipe for you! Make a pie using all homegrown or homemade ingredients!

Of course, we can’t ignore that this pie is also allergy friendly, making it a great modern pioneer pie recipe for those with dietary restrictions. I wanted a blueberry pie that tasted just like the real deal but that I could still enjoy guilt-free. This blueberry pie is:

  • grain-free
  • gluten-free
  • nut free
  • dairy-free
  • naturally sweetened
  • corn free
  • anti-inflammatory

Blueberry Season

I love eating and baking by what’s in season. For Michigan, late July and August are prime blueberry season. That means it’s time for me to break out all my blueberry recipes and create some new ones too! While this grain-free blueberry pie is not a new recipe for me, it is definitely a recipe that is worthy of making every blueberry season!

But aside from pie, I also have a list of other recipes that I like to make with blueberries. They are such a versatile fruit with a sweet, delicious flavor! They go well in just about any baked good! Here are a few of my favorite blueberry recipes:

I also enjoy making blueberry crisp or blueberry hand pies with fresh blueberries. As you can see, our kitchen is full of blueberry baked goods during blueberry season!

Benefits of Blueberries

Blueberry pie not only tastes good, but it is also healthy for you! A healthy and allergy friendly pie, how could you go wrong!? Berries are a known source of many beneficial nutrients and blueberries are no exception! These little blue fruits pack a powerful punch when it comes to nutrition!

Anti-oxidant Rich– I’ve mentioned before that blueberries are rich in anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants help protect our cells and prevent chronic diseases. Of all the berries, blueberries are the best source of anti-oxidants.

High Fiber- Blueberries are relatively high in fiber and can help promote healthy weight loss.

Brain Food– Memory and cognitive health can be improved by consuming blueberries! Blueberries are a brain food!

Anti-Inflammatory– This blueberry pie contains many anti-inflammatory ingredients, and blueberries are one of them! Anti-inflammatory foods prevent many kinds of ailments by reducing the inflammation in your body!

Digestive Aid– Blueberries help improve your digestion.

Vitamin Rich– They also contain many more vitamins and minerals such as vitamin K, C, E, and B vitamins, along with manganese, copper, zinc, iron, and phosphorus.

Storing Blueberries & Blueberry Pie

Blueberries are one of the foods that I like to store up for the winter and for when they go out of season. Since we have access to a pick-your-own blueberry patch, we can stock up on blueberries for a very affordable price.

Our favorite way to preserve blueberries is by freezing them. We wash them in vinegar and portion them out into 1 quart freezer bags. The freezer bags work out nice if we have a recipe that calls for 4 cups of blueberries. They are also easy to get just a few berries out of if you don’t need a full 4 cups. Having frozen blueberries on hand is also helpful for when a recipe calls for frozen, not fresh, blueberries.

One year my sister and I tried canning blueberry pie filling as part of a 4-H project. We found that we didn’t use the canned filling quite as much as we thought we would. In fact, we just used our last jar of canned blueberry pie filling this year, which means it was 4 years old! It still tasted great made into blueberry hand pies!

As for storing this grain-free blueberry pie, once it is cool you have several options. My preferred option is to just cover it and store it at room temperature. It keeps the crust soft and is perfectly fine if you know you are going to be consuming the pie within the next 1-2 days. If you need to store it for longer though, you should cover it and put it in the fridge. It will stay fresh for 3-4 days in the fridge.

Recipe Tips

Blueberry pie is very simple! In fact, I thinks it’s one of the most simple fruit pies to make! Blueberries don’t need to be hulled, sliced, peeled, or mashed at all before they are put into a pie! They simply need to be washed and tossed with filling ingredients. Here are a few recipe tips to ensure your blueberry pie turns out perfectly!

  • This pie works best with fresh blueberries. However, if you want to use frozen berries, I recommend increasing the amount to 5 cups of blueberries since the frozen berries tend to simmer down more when the pie is baked.
  • Instead of coconut sugar in this recipe you can also use maple sugar or honey.
  • I love using a Chebe pie crust for blueberry pie since one box of Chebe makes enough pie crust for me to do a lattice top! However, if you have another favorite allergy-friendly pie crust, feel free to pair it with this pie! I like this grain-free pastry crust or this flaky grain-free pie crust as well.
  • I have only used tapioca flour in the pie filling before, but any absorbent flour would probably work since it just helps to hold the filling together.
  • If you are going to store this pie in the fridge, I highly recommend you cut the pie first! The Chebe pie crust can get a little hard to cut once it has been refrigerated.

Grain-free blueberry pie highlights the delicious flavor of blueberries along with their nutritional value! I love that this pie is both tasty and contains beneficial ingredients! Not only are the blueberries beneficial, but this pie uses a low inflammation thickener and a slow metabolizing sugar. I use Chebe to make the crust and topping because it is also grain-free and easy to work with!

Ingredients

Filling

  • 4 cups organic blueberries
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/4 cup Bob’s Red Mill tapioca flour
  • 1 tsp. organic cinnamon

Crust

  • 1 box of Chebe all-purpose mix
  • 2 tblsp. organic butter or coconut oil melted
  • 2 large, organic eggs
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tblsp. coconut sugar optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 395 degrees F.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the Chebe all-purpose mix, butter (or coconut oil), eggs, and coconut sugar. Add the water a little bit at a time until the dough can be kneaded into a ball.
  • Divide the dough into 2 equal parts. Pat one of the halves into a 9" glass pie plate.
  • You can make the other half into lattice strips or create some other creative crust for the top of the pie. Set aside the pie crust and the topping crust.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine all of the filling ingredients. Stir until everything it coated.
  • Pour the filling ingredients into the pie crust. Place the topping crust over the blueberry filling. Press the edges of the pie crust and the edges of topping crust together so that they don’t separate.
  • Bake for 15 minutes. Without opening the oven door, reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F.
  • Bake for an additional 30-40 minutes. The blueberry filling should be bubbling.
  • Allow the blueberry pie to cool before cutting and serving!

Notes

You can use frozen blueberries in this recipe, however I would recommend including another whole cup since frozen blueberries tend to simmer down more than fresh blueberries.
