They are healthy, but also sweet and delicious! I love making up a few of these crepes for snack because they contain protein, fiber, and are naturally sweetened. It’s like having a sweet pancake filled with sweet, creamy filling! Could a snack get any better!?

Modern Pioneer Recipe
Gluten-free chocolate peanut butter crepes are a modern pioneer recipe. However, they are a super simple recipe to make that only requires wholesome ingredients! In all honesty, I wouldn’t be surprised if the early homesteaders would have made something similar. Only, they wouldn’t have had access to cocoa or cacao powder, so their crepes would not have been chocolate. But they could still fill them with homemade sweet goodies or fruits!
Either way, what makes this recipe a modern pioneer recipe is the fact that it uses wholesome, simple ingredients and it is allergy-friendly. I used oat flour to make these crepes, and oats are naturally anti-inflammatory and a rich source of fiber and plant-based protein. All the sweeteners used in these crepes are natural sweeteners that are easier to metabolize and be used by the body.

What are Crepes?
If you aren’t familiar with crepes you may be wondering what they even are! From the picture, they look like a giant combination of a pancake and a tortilla. Well, that pretty much sums it up. However, they taste way better than that combination sounds!
Crepes usually contain eggs, which helps keep the crepes light and fluffy. The egg whites also add some beneficial protein to the crepes, help give the crepes a little bit of loft, and act as a binding agent to ensure that the crepes stay together, even when folded.
Besides eggs, there is also a little bit of flour, some flavoring, and a sweetener. To keep these gluten-free crepes healthy, I chose some low inflammation flour, a nutritious flavoring, and an all-natural sweetener.
That’s why I consider these gluten-free chocolate peanut butter crepes a healthy snack!

The Best Crepe Filling
No sense in having a healthy crepe if the filling isn’t healthy too! So, I went about creating a healthy but delicious filling for my chocolate crepes! Fillings for crepes can be any assortment of foods, but when I think of a crepe filling, I generally like the thought of a creamy, smooth filling.
Thus the creation of a creamy, smooth peanut butter filling! To stick with the health theme, I made the filling gluten-free, dairy-free, and naturally sweetened! Check out the recipe to see what I used!
However, also feel free to experiment with your own fillings! Here are a few ideas that I came up with that I thought sounded pretty good:
- use melted chocolate chips instead of the peanut butter in this filling recipe
- leave out the flavoring in the filling and sweeten the filling with maple syrup for a maple flavored filling
- mix in some homemade caramel instead of peanut butter for a caramel flavored filling
- add some fruit, like strawberries or banana
- or how about my favorite idea, dairy-free ice cream or dairy-free whipped cream!

The Best Crepe Toppings
As you can see, not only did I fill the crepes with a delicious filling, but I also added some extravagant toppings! So, I do have to make a confession, the toppings may not be all that healthy, but at least they are healthier. To keep these crepes as healthy as possible you may want to skip over some of the more sugary toppings and instead use more nuts, seeds, or fruit. But here are my topping ideas in case you need some inspiration:
- organic and dairy-free chocolate syrup
- crushed peanuts
- assortment of crushed nuts and seeds
- shredded coconut
- chopped fruit (I think strawberries or bananas would be excellent!)
- Unreal chocolate gems
- organic and gluten-free sprinkles
Also, in case you are wondering where you can find some of these filling, topping, or crepe ingredients, I’ll let you know where I buy mine. Of course, the resources may vary depending on where you live.
I can find dairy-free ice cream at my local co-op grocery store as well as Meijer, Walmart, and Whole Foods Market. I buy my dairy-free whipped cream at my local co-op. Gluten-free and dairy-free chocolate syrup can be found on Amazon or at Walmart or Meijer. Unreal chocolate gems can be bought on Thrive Market or at Whole Foods Market. I buy my gluten-free sprinkles at Whole Foods Market too.
Recipe Tips
These crepes truly are very easy to make. I made mine up in about 15-20 minutes, and that’s with grinding my oats to make oat flour and making this recipe for the very first time! I am confident that you could make this recipe and have them turn out just like mine did! Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Room temperature eggs work the best, they incorporate into the batter better.
- You can use 6 egg whites instead of 3 whole eggs.
- You can use oat flour or you can make your own by grinding whole oats in a high-power blender.
- If you don’t have tapioca flour, you can substitute arrowroot flour instead.
- You can use cocoa powder or a hot chocolate mix instead of the cacao powder, I chose the cacao powder because it is the unrefined and a healthy version of chocolate.
- Instead of pure maple syrup, you can use raw honey, just may sure that it is liquid and not crystallized.
- You can also use any dairy-free yogurt alternative instead of the coconut yogurt. I like using coconut yogurt or oat yogurt.
- The batter consistency for these crepes should be like a runny waffle batter.
Gluten-free chocolate peanut butter crepes are an excellent, healthy snack option for those of us who are on a low inflammation diet! I love the light and fluffy texture of these crepes combined with the smooth and creamy filling. I also think that they could be used for a lot more than just a snack, maybe a dessert? A lunch? Or even a breakfast?
Gluten-free Chocolate Peanut Butter Crepes
Ingredients
- 3 large organic, pasture-raised eggs
- 2/3 cup gluten-free oats, ground into flour
- 1/4 cup Bob's Red Mill tapioca flour
- 2 T. cacao powder
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 1/4-1/2 cup organic coconut milk beverage
Filling
- 1/4 c. organic creamy peanut butter
- 1/2 cup dairy-free yogurt
- 1 T. raw honey
Instructions
- Preheat a 9" cast iron skillet over medium heat with 1/4 tsp. of bacon fat, coconut oil, or ghee in it.
- In a medium mixing bowl, combine all of the crepe ingredients. Beat with hand beaters until all the ingredients are combined.
- Pour some of the batter into the cast iron skillet to make approximately a 5" crepe. Cook for 1-2 minutes, then flip. The tops will firm up and be bubbly when they are ready to be flipped. Cook for a remaining 1-2 minutes. Each side should be lightly browned.
- Repeat with the remaining batter. Set the crepes on a plate until you are ready to serve them.
- In a medium mixing bowl, beat together the filling ingredients. Divide the filling between the crepes and secure each crepe closed with a toothpick. Enjoy!

As for dairy-free yogurt, my favorite brand is SoDelicious coconut yogurt or Nancy’s oat yogurt. I can find SoDelicious coconut yogurt at my local co-op, Meijer, and Whole Foods Market. I can buy Nancy’s oat yogurt at my local co-op and health food store.
Made with anti-inflammatory oat flour, nutritious cacao powder, protein rich eggs, and pure maple syrup, these crepes are healthy and delicious! The creamy peanut butter filling is what puts the icing on the crepe if you ask me! They are super easy to make and I love having them for snack. You can go crazy with the toppings and get creative with the fillings, just depends on what you feel like that day!
