Why We Recommend Amazon Products

We recommend Amazon because… well, doesn’t everyone shop on Amazon? We also feel that Amazon is a good resource for products that are useful for becoming a modern pioneer. Of course, not everything good comes from Amazon, so we promise to only recommend products that we feel are quality and durable for use on the homestead.

Mostly we buy poultry supplies and baking supplies from Amazon. When possible, we try to support our local businesses, but sometimes Amazon is the best place to get a product at a reasonable price.

Our Favorite Amazon Products

Vitamix- We use our Vitamix all the time! From grinding up oats to make oat flour, to blending together a smoothie, to even making waffle batter! Our homestead kitchen would not be complete without our Vitamix.

Wright’s Liquid Smoke– This liquid smoke is the key ingredient to homemade BBQ’s, marinades, and venison roasts. It makes everything taste better and has the perfect smokey flavor.

Nutiva Coconut Flour– Nutiva Coconut flour is finely ground from fresh coconuts that are harvested in Southeast Asia. We like to combine it with other grain-free flours to make delicious cookies, bars, pie crusts, buns, and other baked goods. It is a very absorbent flour which sometimes requires a little extra moisture.

Chebe All-purpose Bread Mix– We always have two, or three, or twenty… of these all-purpose bread mixes in our pantry. They are grain-free, gluten-free, and can easily be made dairy-free. We use them for making all sorts of things like bread, rolls, pretzels, blondie bars, crackers, and pie crusts!

Brinsea Ecoglow– Our Brinsea Ecoglow has been put through its paces and is still running strong. We have found that it works wonderful for raising chicks in a more natural way. It also saves on electricity, is easy to clean, and is not a fire hazard!

Grubblies Black Soldier Fly Larvea– Our flock can attest to the quality of these treats. They love them! I dare say they like fly larvae better than mealworms, but sometimes it’s hard to tell. We love giving these treats to our flock on occasion because they are high in calcium and protein.

Elector PSP– This stuff has been a life saver for us. Living in the woods in northern Michigan pretty much guarantees a few problems with external parasites. That’s when we break out the Elector and it takes care of the problem after one application!

Treats for Chickens Sea Kelp– This all-natural supplement is a favorite of mine to give to our flock. We like to sprinkle it over treats or mix it into some fermented feed to give to an ailing chicken.

The Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow– We believe this is a must-have resource for every backyard chicken keeper. The information in this book is well researched and a reliable source for anything chicken health related. It is comprehensive but easy to read, and it even covers some natural alternatives.

Storey’s Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow– Another great chicken keeping resource to have in your bookshelf, this book goes above and beyond the basics of raising backyard chickens. After reading this book, you will have a better understanding of your backyard flock.

Fresh Eggs Daily by Lisa Steele– We love this resource for raising our chickens naturally. It is a great reference for what natural remedies and supplements to use when and how to raise chickens naturally on a daily basis.

Gardening with Chickens by Lisa Steele– Another great book by Lisa Steele, this one covers everything you need to know about gardening with your backyard chickens! We found it was a very helpful resource for beginner gardeners too!

Farm Innovators Heated Pet Bowl– We love our heated pet bowls! They are such a life saver during the cold Michigan winters. Our flock can have fresh water at all times without the hassle of hauling water every couple of hours.

Farm Innovators Heated Water Base– Another winter chicken keeping lifesaver, we have two of these heated water bases (one for each coop) and couldn’t imagine a winter without them. They are durable and work fantastic, even in below zero temperatures!
